Hard disk failure…

My 1 TB external hard drive has, for some reason, decided to die on me. I am now panicking in a very calm, rational manner – this means the loss of all my school documents, photographs and  film footage. Oh godRead the rest of this entry »

Quick Takes: Wonder Girls – Be My Baby

And… The Wonder Girls are back with Be My Baby, a fun, catchy and upbeat song that’s very Christmas-y dance. Loving the song so far – the lyrics are cute, the dance is energetic (probably why they look a bit exhausted), and the visual style is reminiscent of Beyoncé’s Single Ladies.

I also like that they have English subtitles. This is something Korean entertainment companies should look at (and follow), if they want to up their standards and get a piece of that pie of growing international fans.

And… Big Bang wins the EMA!

This is probably the best news ever to wake up to. In a category judged entirely by fans, we VIPs helped Big Bang beat the other worldwide acts at the EMA 2011 with our incessant votes till our fingers were sore – and it was all worth it. They look so happy finally! (video)

Happy birthday, Steph!

Dear best friend,

It’s been two decades since you first popped out squalling and bloody out of your mother’s vagina, and guess what! You’re getting closer to being an old fogey, just like me. Minus the aching knees and backs. Read the rest of this entry »

Living, not living

Colours

I’ve been living in a giddy bubble the past two days.

It’s as though the wool has been pulled off my eyes, and I can see with a startling clarity what I was missing. It’s a bit loony, but I see so much joy and beauty in life around me and it bubbles over into passionate declarations of love and embracing everything to the fullest.

My friends can definitely testify to the madness that’s taken over me – they’ll probably describe in detail the childish, weird things I can’t help doing. Like going “‘SUP!” at my classmates really excitedly all of a sudden. Or breaking out into my favorite songs (Tablo’s Tomorrow ft. Taeyang) while walking up the school hill. Or proclaiming that happy madness is preferable to rational depression in the Ladies, only to realise Delight hadn’t come in and my other classmates, standing outside the door, can hear quite clearly what I said.

It doesn’t even make sense to me, but I’m just going along with whatever’s happening.

It’s amazing how bright the future looks.

Unconditional love

It’s been two weeks. Two weeks of uncertainty, worry and fear. Two weeks of shutting down myself so that I wouldn’t hurt as much if the worst came to realisation.

My mum’s finally come back from her trip to Taiwan. She’d left early in the morning, right before I went to school. I said goodbye. I don’t remember if she’d replied. My memories are hazy, and I went through each day in a haze.

I think she hugged us. Or it might just be my imagination, born out of a longing for something once available in abundance.

David Garrett in town

So… David Garrett came to town on Oct 6 and 7, and boy was I glad to catch him both at his exclusive showcase at Avalon and at his signing session at Paragon. It was an amazing experience, because he is such a great violinist.

The reason why he’s so awesome, in my opinion, is his talent for crossing classical and different genres of music like rock and heavy metal. Yes, heavy metal.

He’s done Smooth Criminal, Smells like Teen Spirit and November Rain just to name a few, but that isn’t all he offers. He mixed up Vivaldi and Vertigo by U2, which is one of my favourite songs from his new album, Rock Symphonies.

I mean, seriously. Vivaldi? Pardon my uncultured-ness, but if you’d asked me two weeks ago whom he was, I would have just stared at you. Blankly.

It’s how he’s crossed over genres that sounds like it would be really weird if you put them together, but yet he pulls it off wonderfully. At the same time, he’s introduced classical to people like me who would never have given it the time of the day before. And I’m still surprised at how much I’m enjoying it thus far.

I had to buy his album from That CD Shop to get the invite to his showcase at Avalon (which was really hard to find, by the way), but it was worth every cent of it. I got to watch the showcase, get his autograph, and have a keepsake of my own. Kind of like a 3-for-1 deal. Heh.

Watching him play live is so much different from listening to my iPod, but at the same time, it’s the same stuff I’ve been hearing on loop. You can feel the passion emanating from him as he makes his violin sing…. and welps, folks, it’s pretty amazing.

I didn’t record anything from Avalon, so here’s Kashmir (Led Zeppelin), recorded by another fan from the showcase.

And here’s DG holding up the mike for his guitar buddy, Marcus Wolf, who’s equally awesome as well. But I like blondes better. Even if it’s dyed. Heh.

DG receiving a Platinum award for Rock Symphonies at the end of the showcase, which ended rather abruptly. I thought the deejays could have helped smoothed the transition over better by mentioning that he was on his last few songs, before bringing out the bloke from Universal Music (UM).

Okay! Moving on.

I managed to lug down my Nikon and take a couple of pics and videos. This was about an hour before the autograph session was due to start, and already there was quite a queue. You can’t really see it from this angle because some folks were sitting down on the floor, like any other typical Singaporean. Heh. Also, I think UM SG posted a picture of some fans queuing up two hours earlier. So really, I’m quite a normal fan by their standards.

Here’s the first song he played, Smooth Criminal. I think it’s fast becoming his signature tune.

Pirates of the Carribean from the signing session.

I really was too far back, so I wasn’t able to get much good shots of DG and his guitarist. These were the only salvageable ones, and I had to edit it quite a bit. I quite like that red head band he’s got on. Heh.

Thought it’d be nice to have a shot of Marcus as well, because he’s really a good guitarist and you can tell there’s music compatibility between them boys when they play. Best shot I could get, and I had to do quite a bit of editing to get it like this.

And lastly, how could I not show off the autograph I got from DG? Heh.

And that’s pretty much the end of two wonderful days. Oh and guess what? He’s coming back next February for a concert, and boy am I getting tickets to his show. Heh. Until next time, folks.
